Librarian I positions perform entry-level professional librarian work in a branch library or a section of the Central Library; and perform other duties as assigned.
 
NOTES:
·         Work schedules may include evenings and weekends.
·         The list established for these positions may be used to fill full-time, half-time and/or limited-hourly vacancies.
·         Employees in the Librarian series who obtain a Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science Degree, are eligible for 5% additional pay.
·         Some positions may require bilingual communication skills for which an additional $0.70 per hour may be paid.
 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
 
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:
1.   Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) Degree.
2.   Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education (i.e., minimum completed units = 120 semester/180 quarter), which must include completion of at least 9 semester/14 quarter units of postgraduate or undergraduate library science course work, AND one and a half years of full-time experience as a paraprofessional Librarian.
 
NOTES:
·          Applicants who do not have an MLS or MLIS Degree  must provide proof of ALL library science course work completed.
·         Qualifying course work is that which is considered creditable toward the completion of an MLS or MLIS Degree.
 
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
·         Experience working with diverse populations.
·         Strong customer service skills.
·         Supervisory experience.
·         Familiarity with the use of online electronic communication and information retrieval database systems.
·         Experience with automated bibliographic, cataloging, materials circulation and patron database systems.
·         Bilingual communication skills.
 
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS (MUST SUBMIT WITH APPLICATION):

·       Proof of transcripts showing completion of the library science course work, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.

 SCREENING PROCESS:
The screening process will consist of a comprehensive evaluation of the application for applicable education, experience, and/or training to ensure all minimum requirements have been met. Successful candidates will be placed on a list which will be used to fill position vacancies during the next six months (180 days). For each vacancy, only those candidates with the most appropriate qualifications will be contacted by the hiring department for an interview.
 SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTSEmployment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes that are applicable to this job, which may include but are not limited to the following:  Confirmation of citizenship/legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review/exam (which may include drug alcohol testing); reference checks; and a fingerprint check. The fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and/or the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report.  Certain positions may require additional screening processes which may include a polygraph examination and/or background investigation.  All of these processes must be successfully completed before employment begins.  A positive test for alcohol, illegal drugs or inadequately explained prescription drugs, misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of pertinent facts in any step of the screening/selection process may be cause for disqualification and/or termination of employment. Nothing in this job posting constitutes an expressed or implied contract for employment with the City of San Diego.
